WHY & HOW BODY STORES FAT??
Hey "Don't eat those cakes, pizzas, pastries" they will make you fat", "Don't eat those fatty foods they will increase your weight"," you are gaining weight because you are eating too much", I am sure you guys are hearing these words since your childhood from your parents,friends... etc.
Let's go deep into the topic and know why you gain fat. This will be helpful in losing your excess body fat,Gaining weight,Maintaining weight&living a healthy life.Stay Tuned..........
"Stored body fat"--what it means?
" Fat" is basically a stored form of energy,It is stored in specialized cells called Adipose Tissue.
Fat is mostly stored as "Visceral fat" around your internal organs& "Sub cutaneous fat" which you want to burn.
Why body stores fat?
Body saves some energy as stored fat for its use when required, which gives body a "Survival Advantage",just like you save some money in bank for future use.
Fat has also high calorific value compared to protein & carbohydrates.1gram fat=9 calories.
In males fat accumulates mostly in lower belly while in females it accumulates in Thigh&Butt region.
**You save certain thing only when you have some extra amount, Right!!,Similarly body store fat only when it has some extra amount of energy.
How Body stores fat?
These are scientific concepts I will try my best to explain with help of simple examples.
Maintainance calories & Caloric Surplus:-
We need certain amount of calories for our daily activity like breathing, walking, eating .etc which we get from our food. We call these calories as " Maintenance Calories ".
If we are eating excess food then they generate extra calories and our body goes into a state of "caloric surplus "which favours fat accumulation.
**3500 calories is equivalent to 1 pound body weight.
Let me Explain with Example:-
A boy called Bikash needs 2500 per day which we call as maintenance calories for Bikash. If he starts consuming 3000 calories then he goes into a state of Caloric surplus of 500 calories. In 7 days he will be in a state of caloric surplus of 3500 calories which means he will gain 1 pound weight. If Bikash is doing exercise then he will gain some muscle along with fat.
.Again on the next day you are eating too many carbs which will again be stored as your Glycogen.
In similar manner after some days your glycogen stores will be filled up and the excess glucose will be converted to fat and stored in adipose tissue.
If you are doing exercise then the glycogen store depletes ,after having your carb rich meal the glycogen store gets filled up which reduces chance of fat accumulation in your body&also burns the stored fat.
Factors contributing to fat storage:-
1.Metabolism&BMR:-
You must have seen some people eat too much but they couldn't gain weight while some people put on weight very easily.
Here comes the role of BMR or Basal Metabolic Rate.
Which means the amount of energy our body needs at rest to performance It's functions like:-Breathing,Circulation, Excretion ...etc.
*****persons with high muscle mass have high BMR which means they will not gain fat easily.
*****Females have low BMR compared to males so they accumulate fat easily.
******Age is also a vital factor,Elderly gain fat more easily.
2.Concept of INSULIN SPIKE:-
Its a trending topic worldwide now a days.lets know about it.
Insulin is a hormone secreted by pancreas which mediates glucose uptake from blood stream to Muscle &Adipose tissue.
If you are consuming high Glycemic index foods they cause a rapid insulin spike and all the glucose in blood will be taken to Muscle &Adipose tissue.
If the glycogen stores in muscles is full then It's converted to Adipose tissue and stored as fat.
##High vs Low GLYCEMIC INDEX foods:-
High G.I. foods release glucose to blood instantly and cause insulin spike as a result the glucose released is rapidly taken up by
Muscle & Adipose tissue. So after some times it makes you feel hungry again.so they increase the risk of fat accumulation and many other disease.
While low G.I. foods release glucose slowly over a period of time and don't cause rapid insulin spike which is very good.It keeps
your stomach full for longer period and you don't feel hungry too.
Genetics:-
Some people genetically blessed with a good amount of muscle mass with high metabolism so they don't accumulate fat easily.
Level of physical activity:-
It's a very important contributing factor in fat storage. 20 minutes of any kind of
physical activity makes you fit and burns previously stored fat.
Stress:-
Stress increases the
level of Stress Hormone-"Cortisol" which increases hunger and causes fat accumulation.
Bad eating habits:-
Modern generation people are addicted to chips,fries...etc, consumption of such high
calorie snacks during office, studies, work promotes weight gain & many other disease.
Sleep:-sleep deprivation leads to weight gain by slowing down metabolism and increasing the level of stress hormones which is scientifically proven.
6-8 hours sleep daily is must.
*Proper Quality sleep makes you more active&Energetic.
Medications:-Certain medicine like:-Anti depressants, anti psychotics, contraceptive pills causes fat accumulation in body.

Suppose,You are eating carbohydrates(carbs) in all your meals. After digestion carbs are taken to blood stream in form of glucose. If you are doing some sort of physical activity then it gets utilized from blood stream. If you have a sedentary life style then that glucose is converted to glycogen and stored in "Muscle"&'Liver".Again on the next day you are eating too many carbs which will again be stored as your Glycogen.
